Thanks to Congress, The Matthew Shepard Act was passed. And thanks to President Obama, the Federal Hate Crimes Bill now includes more protection for Gays & Lesbians from Hate Crimes. As Obama stated, "we've passed inclusive hate crimes legislation to help protect our citizens from violence based upon: what they look like, who they love, how they pray and who they are..."
This is an important time in history for the continued fight for peace, equality, and freedom from harm for the Gays & Lesbians of this country. Many acts of violence are acted upon Gays & lesbians because of their gender identity and/or sexual orientation, which comes out of ignorance and fear. Most of this anger does come from religious folks, which should be noted and questioned.
This Federal Act of protection, signed into law by President Obama, will help to deter further violence by prosecuting hate mongers, and set an example for the future: hating gays simply because of religion or because you think it's still a choice, does not gives someone the freedom to harm another.
